Summary

Carol Baron interviews Hilda Morley (Wolpe), an American poet and the widow of American contemporary composer Stefan Wolpe. Morley discusses her life and career, her family background and her life with S. Wolpe. She speaks about Wolpe's strong personality that helped him come to terms with the rejection of his music by the American musical establishment and to fight Parkinson's disease during the last years of his life. She talks about his career as a composer and teacher, and mentions his more successful and recognized colleagues such as John Cage and Milton Babbitt. She also talks about Wolpe's musical works such as the Violin sonata and the Saxophone quartet. She reminiscences about their meetings with contemporary visual artists and musicians of that time at the Artists' Club in New York in the 1950's, the composer's interest in paintings, about his circle of friends, and his complicated relationships with his former wife Irma Wolpe Rademacher and his opponents.
