- Summary
- Joseph Hillyer Brewer was a publisher, librarian and college professor. Approximately fifty percent of the collection consists of genealogical notes, charts, correspondence, and clippings resulting from his and other family members' research into the histories of the Ackerman, Bogardus, Bradley, Burr, Chardarayne, Creighton, Giles, Cropsey, Havens, Keeler, Montfort, Pryer, Roorbach, Stayner, Schuyler, Van Vechten, Ward, and Whiting families.
- The remainder is comprised of miscellaneous original material, ca. 1797-1927, relating to the above families, including military documents, correspondence, invitations, notices, tickets, calling cards, legal documents, and other family ephemera. Also included are portrait photographs and a few miniature paintings, mid- to late-19th century, of the Roorbach and allied Fuller, Hillyer, Van Vechten, and other families. Photographs are mostly in the form of cartes de visite; daguerreotypes, and ambrotypes.
