Summary

[Begin Video 1] Dorothy Vislocky discusses her pathway to dance and Alwin Nikolais (Nik), her childhood including folk dancing and singing, taking modern dance class in college with Humphrey-Weidman teacher, taking job as senior dance counselor with Phyllis Lamhut, arriving at the Nikolais studio in 1951 or 1952, the impact of taking classes at Henry Street Settlement with Nik, Nik's work with children, what facilitated her joining the company, performing in "Noumenon" and "Village of whispers", and the concept of abstraction and dehuminization. [Pause at 29:21, 30:10 begin Video 2] Vislocky continues to discuss "Noumenon", performing at University of Illinois with Harry Parch, performing in "Kaleidoscope", her first concert in the company with Phyllis Lamhut, being able to choreograph within the company, the significance of being involved with Nik and new ways of looking at dance, her favorite work "Masks, props and mobiles", and the reason for leaving Henry Street and the company. [Pauses at 58:42, 59:41 begin Video 3] Vislocky discusses the development of the Hunter College Dance Program and her involvement, teaching at the Hunter High School, her first full-time position at Hunter College, establishing the Dance Club, developing the curriculum and space for the Dance Program beginning in 1972 which led to the Dance Major Program with guest teachers, her company People/Dorothy Vislocky Dance Theatre, her first work "Mirroring walls", and her work site-specific work "Sit out". [Pauses at 1:28:43, 1:29:19 begin Video 4] Vislocky discusses her choreographic work "Collage of mysteries, Collage of Memories, Collage of people textures", and concludes with the impact of Alwin Nikolais on her training and career.
