- Summary
- Gloria Hammond interviews Andre Kostelanetz, popular orchestral music conductor and arranger, one of the pioneers of easy listening music, who was a major figure in U.S. popular music and on radio for half a century. The interviews were recorded for the book with the same title that was published in 1981 by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Publishers. Kostelanetz discusses his life and career as a conductor and arranger in Russia in the early 1920's and later in the USA that ended up conducting 400 concerts, including tour programs around the world, New York City summer parks concerts, and his innovative Promenade concerts. He also talks about his childhood and studies in Petrograd, Russia, his family background and the beginning of his musical career as an assistant conductor at the Petrograd Opera before he reached the age of 20. He also speaks in detail about his successful long-time career as a conductor and arranger in the USA, where he worked for the CBS radio network and conducted the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He also talks about popularization of classical music and arrangements of light music, that he made, using heavily concentrated instrumental sonorities, and about his orchestrations that had a direct influence on film music of the time. He also analyzes works that he commissioned.
