Summary
Robert Sherman replays excerpts from his interviews with Andre Kostelanetz, a popular orchestral music conductor and arranger, one of the pioneers of easy listening music. Kostelanetz comments on selections he made for his programs, on the need to bring music to every part of the city, wherever people live, and the need for government support. Once again, the conductor speaks about his early musical life in St. Petersburg, Russia, and his later career as a conductor and arranger in the USA. The following musical works are played during the interview: Overture to La Revoltosa (from a 19th c. zarzuela ; music by Ruperto Chapí); God created great whales (including recorded "songs" of whales ; music by Alan Hovhaness); Prelude from Bachianas brasileiras, no. 4 (H. Villa-Lobos, composer ; A. Kostelanetz, piano); finale [i.e. 3rd and 4th movts.] of Liszt's Piano concerto no. 1 (Earl Wild, soloist); Kálmán's selection [I. Maritza's entrance from the duet, Mein lieber Schatz, from Countess Maritza] from a recent Promenade Concert (Carole Farley, soprano ; A. Kostelanetz, conductor)
