- Summary
- Deborah Jowitt discusses the New York modern dance scene during the 1940's and 1950's and the choreographer, dancer, and teacher Mary Anthony. She talks about modern dance in the 1940's when Anthony moved to New York City along with the importance of Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey, how audiences reacted to dance, how modern dance is different from ballet, the interest and popularity of psychology and literature in modern dance choreography during that time, and a discussion of the New Dance Group and what it represented. Jowitt remembers meeting and performing with Mary Anthony when Jowitt was still a member of the Juilliard Dance Ensemble including performing in Threnody and observing a Blood wedding rehearsal, observing Anthony performing in a John Butler concert, Hanya Holm and Mary Wigman's connection to Anthony along with a brief chronological background, and a description of From the horses mouth performances with memories of Anthony. This DVD concludes with a brief interview with Gwen [Bye], a former dancer with Mary Anthony, and a discussion about performing in Anthony's Therondy at Anthony's 40th anniversary concert.
