- Summary
- Three former principal dancers of the New York City Ballet reminisce about the company's founder and artistic director, George Balanchine. Arthur Mitchell and Edward Villella begin by discussing the current activities of the ballet companies they currently serve as artistic directors. Each then describes his early dance training and entry into the New York City Ballet. Moderator Violette Verdy contributes to their recollections of Balanchine's qualities: his ability to discern a dancer's special gifts and to enhance these gifts through the choreography he made for them; how his classes at the School of American Ballet provided a foundation for his experimental choreography, and how his choreography in turn served as a teaching tool; his knack of communicating the heart of a role through pithy sayings and analogies; his emphasis on the reciprocal nature of partnering, which belies his often-quoted statement that "ballet is woman"; his ability to create ballets that had passion without requiring histrionics from the performer. Also discussed are choreographer Jerome Robbins and his work with the New York City Ballet, and Stanley Williams, a teacher at the School of American Ballet noted for his ability to elucidate Balanchine's technique. A brief question-and-answer session with the audience follows the discussion.
