Andre Kostelanetz speaks with Charles Shaw about music in the postwar world after his visits to England and the Soviet Union. War developed a huge new audience, making music a common language, he says. GIs spread our popular music throughout the world, but not at the expense of classical and "native" music. (Lily Pons was suffering from hay fever and could not appear).
