- Local Note
- Pforzheimer copy: Blank memo and account pages dutifully filled in by Henry J. Lewis, identified by Alumni Oxonienses as Henry John Lewis, son of John Lewis, gentleman, of St. George's, Hanover Square, London. Henry matriculated at Worcester College in 1818, at age 18. The diary records his various dining partners, daily doings, and various activities exemplary of a young man preparing to become a clergyman. Many entries record correspondence exchanges and meetings with his "dearest Bessey," Elizabeth Clifton. Following the events recorded by this diary, Lewis earned his M.A. in 1827; became the vicar of St. Peter's, Worcester, in 1831; served as chaplain of St. Oswald's Hospital, and as a minor canon. He died on the 15th of February, 1835. -- Diary bound in marbled wrappers.
