Summary
Peter Boal discusses the process of recreating Giselle, an overview of the lecture, the history of the original creation of Giselle, and a synopsis of the Giselle plot. Doug Fullington discusses the Vladimir Ivanovich Stepanov notation used for creating this reconstruction of Giselle, the history of the Steponov system, and what the Giselle notation revealed along with several slides showing how this system is deciphered. Marian Smith discusses how the musical score was composed in the studio along with the choreography and mime, information from the annotations, the ratio of dancing to mime/action, and how certain parts of the score's notes relate to the libretto.

  • Original production premiere was June 28, 1841 by the Ballet du Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique (Paris), with choreography by Jean Coralli and Julies Perrot ; Petipa production premiered on Feb. 5, 1884 by the Imperial Ballet (St. Petersburg), with choreography by Marius Petipa.
