- Dr. Gilliam talks about her life and work and her experiences abroad. Professor of Anthropology at SUNY, Old Westbury; courses taught; education, UCLA, National School of Anthropology and History (Mexico); move to Brazil and reason for return to U.S.; how she became interested in the politics of language and why she got her Ph. D. at Union Graduate School, an experimental school; her dissertation; what her brothers do; parents and ancestors; growing up, use of Spanish, Japanese accent; high school and scholarship to UCLA; how she learned Spanish and Portuguese; Prof. Silverman and his influence; racism at UCLA; experience in graduate school in Mexico; interest in region below Alcapulco and her eventual return to do research; description of black and Indian towns and the social hierarchy in Mexico; African influences that have survived in Mexico; Mexican family with whom she lived; journey on Japanese freighter to Brazil; feelings about Carnival.
