- This screenplay was apparently submitted by Mamet's agency to Spike Lee. At one point, Richard Pryor wanted to play the title role and Sidney Lumet would direct. The history of the film's production and the various scripts, actors, and directors considered for it is recounted, in part, in Ann Thompson's article, "Malcolm, Let's Do Lunch," in Mother Jones, v. 16, no. 4 (July-Aug., 1991), p. 24.
