Description
30 prints in 1 volume : engraving; plate marks 28 x 11 cm, 23 x 17 cm or smaller, volume 30 cm
Summary
  • Chiefly copies, many in reverse, of a group of engravings by or ascribed to Luca Ciamberlano and Francesco Brizio after drawings by Agostino Carracci, first issued by Pietro Stefanoni, approximately 1600, under the title Scuola perfetta per imparare a disegnare tutto il corpo humano; know also by other titles and with different combinations of prints. See: DeGrazia, Diane. Prints and related drawings by the Carracci family, 1979, page 57. For reproductions of 22 of the source prints, see Illustrated Bartsch, v. 39, Agostino Carracci, The drawing book/Le livre de dessein, no. 3, 7, 12-13, 15-16, 28-30, 35-37, 41-42, 45, 49-50, 54-55, 58, 60, 64, which correspond to no. 2-8, 10-12, 16-21, 23-27 and 30 in the present work.
  • First print is engraved allegorical title page, with arms of Cardinal Farnese, depicting Hercules with a vanquished opponent, driving off a winged creature with a human face and a lion's body (a Stymphalian bird from his sixth labor, or a harpy; the two mythological creatures were sometimes conflated). This subject is based on a detail of "Trionfo della Divina Provvidenza," a ceiling painting by Pietro da Cortona, in the Galleria di Palazzo Barberini, Sala dei Palafranieri, Rome. Remaining prints are numbered sequentially 2-30 and signed at foot of plate F C F (Franciscus Curtus fecit); no. 7 also signed within image (a hand inscribing "F. Curtus Bonon."). They depict studies of heads and busts of women, men and children; body parts such as ears, lips, eyes, arms, hands, hands working (writing, drawing, doing needlework, playing a keyboard), legs and feet.
  • Size of plate mark varies. Title page: 23 x 17 cm.; no. 2-27, 30: 18 x 12 cm.; no. 28-29: 28 x 11 cm.
