Summary
Video produced at the Century Association's exhibition devoted to the Phoenix Theatre and its founders, T. Edward Hambleton and Norris Houghton. Includes footage of the exhibit's installation, and a tour of the completed exhbition conducted by Hambleton and Houghton, accompanied by actors Jerry Stiller and Remak Ramsay. They discuss several of the Phoenix's major productions, such as the 1954 musical The Golden Apple. Concludes with the exhibition's opening night, and speeches delivered by the two honorees and the exhibit's curator, Josie Merck.

  • The Phoenix Theatre, an Off-Broadway producing organization that staged both new works and revivals, was founded in 1953 by T. Edward Hambleton and Norris Houghton. Its first home was in the former Yiddish Art Theatre on Second Avenue in the East Village. In the early 1960s the Phoenix moved to new quarters and merged with the Association of Producing Artists to become APA-Phoenix. The two companies disbanded in 1969. The Phoenix continued to produce plays until its dissolution in 1982.
