- The story of Paul Clitheroe, whose youth is spent in San Francisco earning a meager living as a writer and actor, and who voyages to the South Sea Islands where he finds happiness in the arms of three young native islanders.

- Stoddard, a poet, journalist, and travel writer, alluded elliptically to his homosexuality in his memoir South-Sea Idyls.
- Stoddard originally planned to call the novel So Pleased to Have Met You. His friend Rudyard Kipling suggested the book's eventual title.
