Biography (note)
  • Carmelita Maracci was a dancer, choreographer, and teacher famous for her blending of ballet and Spanish dance techniques. She is known to have made drawings of fellow dancers, friends, celebrities, and other subjects, examples of which were donated to the Jerome Robbins Dance Division with her collected papers. Muriel Stuart, a British-born ballerina, danced with Anna Pavlova's company from 1916 to 1926. She left to marry, and moved with her husband to Los Angeles, Maracci's home, in 1927. She opened a dance school, and may have made Maracci's acquaintance during that time. In 1935 she relocated to New York City, where she joined the faculty of George Balanchine's School of American Ballet.
