- Written in black pen on 3 leaves of Villa Margherita stationery.
- In 1935, Stein, accompanied by Alice B. Toklas, conducted a lecture tour in the U.S.
- Written to a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, following Stein's lecture there. Stein refers to UNC as "perhaps the simplest and most contenting of Universities. It has an atmosphere of everybody doing simply what they are doing and that is so you that you were just naturally there [...]."
- Stein professes a preference for America to Europe: "Alice was completely lost to America some time since and I guess I am a good deal that way myself now and do not much see the good of Europe as long as there is America [...]."
