  • The sixteen unnumbered plates in pt. 1 are chiefly lithographs and zincographs (including two double tinted and two hand-colored zincos) printed by "Day & Haghe" from delineated drawings by "C. Murchison" and "C. Marchison" (possibly the author's wife, Charlotte, who accompanied the author in the field), "Lady H.t Clive", "T. Webster", and others. The plates facing p. 152 and p. 427 feature maps "engraved by J. Gardner."
  • Plates 1-27 [i.e. 31 plates] are lithographic illustrations of "organic remains" (fossils): inserted at end of pt. 2. There is no plate numbered 28. Plates 29-37 feature hand-colored engravings of 104 cross-sectional views of the geological strata underlying eleven English counties printed on nine folded linen leaves, each bearing the author's signature, laid in as a bound grouping at the end of pt. 2.
  • Three large folded col. maps "drawn and engraved by J. Gardner" and printed on linen-backed paper leaves with additional hand-coloring are also laid in at end of pt. 2.
