- Summary
- The James Weldon Johnson Community Centers, Inc. Photograph Collection documents some of the Center's staff and programs for children, teenagers and adults, dating mainly from the mid-1950s through the 1970s.
- Most of the collection consists of views of children involved in a wide variety of activities, such as art, music, wood-working, knitting, basket weaving, free-play, day trips, camping, parties, holiday celebrations and theater. Celebrations show costumed Halloween parties and a visit from Santa Claus. Day trips include outings to zoos, beaches and rides on the Staten Island Ferry. Other outdoor activities show children playing in playgrounds and streets, making art projects, running races, playing baseball and informally posing for the camera.
- Photos of teenagers depict them posing for informal group portraits, holding discussions, dancing, playing musical instruments, competing in ping-pong and billards, creating art, and participating in award ceremonies. Included is a series of photos documenting a sound-recording program especially created for teens. Adults are shown attending meetings and parties, and engaged in other acivities offered by the Center. Performances are documented by views of audiences and performers singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments. The agency's staff, who are unidentified, are shown in group portraits and in candid shots. The collection also contains a view of Jackie Robinson and James R. Dumpson, then vice chairman of the Narcotics Committee of the Health and Welfare Council, attending a meeting with young people.

- Biography (note)
- James Weldon Johnson Community Centers, Inc. was established in 1948 to provide social services to residents of the James Weldon Johnson Houses, a New York City Housing Authority project in the East Harlem area of Manhattan. In the 1950s the agency expanded and offered programs to all East Harlem residents, including day care, English classes, athletics, theater arts, and a mental health clinic. The expansion of cultural programs was a major focus of the agency's work during the 1960s under the direction of Mildred Zucker, executive director of the agency until 1970. Starting in the 1970s, several programs were discontinued or taken over by other agencies. In the mid-1990s the agency offered day care, Head Start, referral services and housed a small library.
