Summary
Mimeograph typescript of screenplay for the 1946 film; screenplay unused by film's director, George Cukor.
Genre/Form

  • Film scripts.
Note
  • Typed on rectos only.
  • The film is an adaptation of Maugham's novel (Doubleday, 1944) of the same title.
  • Lamar Trotti, a Fox producer and prolific B-movie screenwriter, had written the novel's first screen adaptation, with which the film's director, George Cukor, was dissatisfied. Cukor asked Maugham to produce a screenplay of his novel but found Maugham's version too lengthy. Cukor then gave the Maugham "Revised Final" draft to Trotti to cut and revise. The Maugham "Revised Final" script represents approximately 180 minutes of film time, whereas Trotti's screenplay, as filmed, runs for 145 minutes. When the film was released, Trotti was given sole credit for the screenplay. Filming was delayed until March 1946 so that Tyrone Power, who was in military service, could play the lead role.
