  • Title devised by cataloger.
Biography (note)
  • The haunted ballroom (choreography, Ninette de Valois; music and scenario, Geoffrey Toye) was first performed by the Vic-Wells Ballet in London in 1934. Its scenery and costumes were credited to Motley, a trio of stage designers: Sophie Devine, Margaret Harris, and Elizabeth Montgomery. This costume may be seen in a photograph, held by the Victoria & Albert Museum, of Margot Fonteyn as Young Treginnis (a role first performed by Freda Bamford), the son of the ballet's ill-fated protagonist, the Master of Treginnis. The velvet suit, sash, and lace collar and cuffs were faithfully realized, but instead of the long curls of the design Fonteyn wears a shorter hairstyle.
  • Motley, a team of three British stage designers, comprised the sisters Margaret Harris and Sophie Devine, and their friend Elizabeth Montgomery. Active from 1932 to 1976, they were a major presence in stage design both in Britain and the United States, where Harris and Montgomery worked for a time. They designed plays, ballets, operas, and films, and founded a school for stage design in Britain.
