Details
- Description
- 3 paintings on bristol board : gouache, watercolor, graphite, colored pencil, col.; 37 x 58 cm. or smaller.
- Summary
- Three paintings of fantastical subjects, probably inspired by theatre and music. One depicts a procession of men and women in elaborate costumes evocative of the commedia dell'arte. On the verso are the penciled words "Universal, Ali Baba and the 40 thieves," but although Universal Studios indeed released a film of that title in 1944, directed by Arthur Lubin and starring Maria Montez, it is uncertain whether there is an actual connection with this painting. Another painting depicts two masked female duelists, dressed only in jewels above the waist, observed by four masked and cloaked figures and a grotesque bewigged judge. The third painting is a caricature of a guitarist, a conductor, and a bassist, their bodies composed of their instruments and/or sheet music.

- Biography (note)
- Vincenzo Celli, 1900-1988, is probably best remembered today as a master ballet teacher. He was born in Italy but his family immigrated to Chicago when he was a child, and he spent much of his early life in the United States. He went back to Italy as a young man to study ballet with Enrico Cecchetti, and became a principal dancer, choreographer and ballet master at La Scala, Milan. With the rise of Fascism in the 1930s he returned to the United States. He opened a ballet studio in New York City, where his students, drawn by his teaching of Cecchetti technique, included many of the great names of twentieth-century ballet.
