- First edition, later issue. In this issue, the first 4 pages are unnumbered, followed by pages numbered v, vi, 7, viii and 9-189. There are 8 pages of preliminaries, consisting of title page (unnumbered, copyright statement and name of stereotyper on verso); dedication (unnumbered, verso blank); "Publisher's advertisement" (pages v-vi); and "Index" (pages 7-viii). There is no errata slip, and corrections have been made on pages 31 ("grassy plain") and 121 ("The mills are six and eight miles above the fort").
- In the first issue of the first edition, the first 2 pages are unnumbered, followed by pages numbered iii-iv and 9-189. There are only 4 pages of preliminaries: title page (2 unnumbered pages) and "Publisher's advertisement" (pages iii-iv). - In some copies, in the publication date, the 7 has been changed in ink to an 8.
