First edition, later issue. In this issue, the first 4 pages are unnumbered, followed by pages numbered v, vi, 7, viii and 9-189. There are 8 pages of preliminaries, consisting of title page (unnumbered, copyright statement and name of stereotyper on verso); dedication (unnumbered, verso blank); "Publisher's advertisement" (pages v-vi); and "Index" (pages 7-viii). There is no errata slip, and corrections have been made on pages 31 ("grassy plain") and 121 ("The mills are six and eight miles above the fort").
In the first issue of the first edition, the first 2 pages are unnumbered, followed by pages numbered iii-iv and 9-189. There are only 4 pages of preliminaries: title page (2 unnumbered pages) and "Publisher's advertisement" (pages iii-iv). In some copies, in the publication date, the 7 has been changed in ink to an 8.
