- "A renga. Five mesostics of equal length were written by John Cage using as source material his own writings on ... seventeen subjects in relation to Erik Satie and his work ... The theme is of course Erik Satie. The variations and interludes were produced by letting I Ching chance operations determine which of the five source poems provides the first line, which the second, etc. The mesostic string for the variations was written on the name, Erik Satie, or on its initials. The strings for the interludes were written on the following Satie titles: Mercure, Socrate, Sports et divertissements, Parade, Le fils des étoiles, Pièces froides, Tendrement, Gnossiennes, Nocturnes, Trois morceaux en form de poire"--P. [300-305].
