• Twenty-four copies were projected, but fewer than 15 were actually produced, according to information from the publisher in Spencer Coll. files.
• Object forms part of The first meeting of the Satie Society, a collaborative work by Cage and 7 other artists, and serves as housing for the 8 other included works.
• Inspired by works by Marcel Duchamp, including "The bride stripped bare by her bachelors, even" (also known as "The large glass"); "To be looked at (from the other side of the glass) with one eye, close to, for almost an hour" ("The small glass"); and "Box in a valise."
• Consists of a box constructed from nickel silver and glass. Two panels of laminated glass, framed in nickel silver, form top and bottom surface. Top and bottom of box, respectively 1.5 and 6.3 cm. high, are joined at the left side by a piano hinge; the right side of the box top attaches to the bottom with 2 metal latches, operated by depressing buttons on the right side of the bottom, as on a valise. Both glass panels have been decoratively shattered, i.e. one layer of the laminated glass is cracked, but the whole is stable.
• "Fabricated out of nickel silver and laminated glass. The twenty replies from Satie were hand punched onto the inside and outside of the metal frame. The estate seal, edition number, and publisher's chop were punched randomly on the inside and outside of the frame. The breaking of the glass follows its own natural chance. The back panel of glass was drilled in the two upper corners for hanging"--The first meeting of the Satie Society, c1994, p. [2] at end.
• The "twenty replies" are quotations from Satie's writings and correspondence, translated by Cage and punched randomly into the metal parts of the object. There are 20 quotations from Satie and the words "The first meeting of the Satie Society."
