Summary
The teachings of François Delsarte (1811-1871), French singer and pedagogue, who achieved fame first in France and Europe, are generally considered to be among the sources of modern live performing arts. Their influence is due in part to Delsarte's posthumous American success, which generated in the last decades of the nineteenth century a real Delsartemania. A precise grasp of these teachings, however, remains difficult, as their transmission was essentially oral, and the rare publications of Delsarte's students and heirs have sometimes borne caricatures of a complex opus. A single scientific study (in Italian) was done recently on Delsarte's manuscripts, which are dispersed between the United States and France but some of which have been made accessible through the 1992 publication of the first anthology of Delsarte's texts in their French original version . The present goal is to go beyond these publications by focusing on the essence of "Delsarte's system of expression": the articulation of corporal, spiritual, and artistic questions. Practical work and aesthetic reflection led Delsarte to consider expressive phenomena, artistic action, and the human body as closely related to a spiritual and metaphysical dimension, connecting Catholic theology to Classical and Medieval esoteric thought. The Trinity and the notion of universal correspondences structure his theory, which proposes the incarnation of these metaphysical elements in expressive work. The present examination is based as much upon Delsarte's manuscripts as on the testimonies of artists who learned Delsarte's work through oral transmission. This study enables to update some exclusive information both on the autobiographical level and theoretical sources of this work, and in particular the central position of Thomas d'Aquin's theology and anthropology. Likewise, it provides new theoretical and practical insights into Delsarte's approach to movement. And moving beyond caricatures and polemics on the subject, this thesis finally puts forward elements aimed at better understanding the physical training devised by Delsarte, a training developed in the scope of a song and speech pedagogy based mainly on gesture and movement.
