Summary
Nada Diachenko (dancer) discusses the first time she saw an Erick Hawkins dance concert in 1966-67; how she became a company member in 1971; learning Hawkins dance technique in class; the zen aspect of Hawkins' work; how Hawkins helped dancers to stay present in his work and during class; how he encouraged dancers to study other forms of body work including Mabel Todd's Ideokinesis and Alexander technique; the first piece Diachenko performed with the company, Angels of the inmost heaven; working with Hawkins during the 1970's orchestra creations including Classic kite tails, Orpheus, Death is the Hunter; touring these orchestra pieces and performing them as guests on symphonic concerts; how she learned roles previously performed by other dancers; relationships and tensions between Hawkins, Lucia Dlugoszewski and some of the dancers; how and why she left the company in 1977; and rehearsing late at night including one all night rehearsal to prepare for performance.
