- Summary
- Gloria McLean (dancer) discusses seeing Erick Hawkins in a shared dance concert with Twyla Tharp at the Anta Theater in 1976; taking the beginner 7:30 class at the Hawkins studio in 1978 and then taking the June summer intensive in 1979; how Hawkins began taking other dancers into the company and when Helen [Pelton] became injured McLean auditioned and took over her role, she was then asked to join the company in 1982; the competition in the beginning between the dancers possibly due to her replacing Helen [Pelton]; how she learned roles that were previously performed by other dancers; when Hawkins started using video and the creation of the library; why Hawkins didn't like improvision; length of time needed to create some dances; the steps involved with creating a concept for a dance before the dancers began rehearsing; creating Summer clouds people and notating the choreography in the book; what she learned from Hawkins that influences her own teaching and choreography; the need to dance full out and not mark movements when creating works with Hawkins; creating the first mourner solo from God the reveller; dancing in Hurrah! and having the chance to act while sitting on stage; descriptions of Black lake and the section entitled, Sun setting; learning to work with masks; and the special aesthetic created by Hawkins that is not seen anywhere else today.
