- Summary
- Kelly Holt (dancer) discusses first hearing about Erick Hawkins from his dance teacher in 1954-55; taking classes at the Hawkins studio beginning in Jan. 1958; his first impressions of the studio and classes; learning Hawkins movement and how he needed to let go of everything he knew; studying with Andre Bernard; the holistic and integrated aspect of Hawkins and his classes; Hawkins dance training and experiences performing with George Balanchine and Martha Graham; Kelly studying at the Graham School; Hawkins dancing/performing his own choreographic works in the studio for Holt; watching Hawkins teach Barbara Tucker during the revival of Here and now watchers and 8 clear places; Hawkins asking Holt to join the company and perform in Sudden snake bird; creating Early floating; meeting Hawkins family and seeing the house in Trinidad, Colorado where he was raised; the experience of acting as a dancer with an acting background; performing John Brown for the Expo in 1969 with Hawkins; the physical experience of working with Hawkins as a man; Holt seeing himself as an individual dancer and not as a reflection of Hawkins; greatest touring experience of watching Jim Tyler perform Geography of noon, as they altered the performances; Holt working with Jean Erdman after receiving a phone call from her at 2 am; how Hawkins and Erdman both knew how to take chances; and how exciting it is to revisit working with Hawkins after 50 years.
