Summary
Representations chiefly of theatrical dancers, from the covers of sheet music intended for home performance. The illustrations and music were probably intended as souvenirs of evenings at the theatre, and often depicted popular performers of the day. Among the dancers portrayed in this collection are the Romantic ballerinas Marie Taglioni, Fanny Elssler, Fanny Cerrito, and Pauline Duvernay; the Brothers and Sister Kiralfy, members of a Hungarian family of folk dancers and theatrical producers; and Isadora Duncan, who rebelled against classical ballet and created her own dance style (seen here in the music covers Souvenir à Duncan and Scarf dance, which may depict her or one of her many imitators). The music cover titled Bal masque, galop may portray the Majiltons (Charles, Frank, and Marie), a trio of acrobatic dancers.
