Summary

Collection consists of portraits of mainly African American stage and screen actors and actresses, dating from the 1920s to the 1980s. Most of the photographs are studio portraits, some used for publicity purposes, as well as a few views of thespians at events and social gatherings. Among the actresses and actors depicted are Joseph Attles, Scatman Crothers, Al Freeman, Jr., Ted Lange, Cleavon Little, Richard Roundtree, Francis Foster, Esther Rolle, and Edna Thomas. Images from the 1920s to the 1950s are limited. Other collections containing photographs of actors and actresses include Film Stills, Television Stills, Theater Stills, the Helen-Armstead Johnson Photograph Collection, the Frederick D. Murphy Photograph Collection, and the Portrait Collection.
