- The letters begin when Le Clercq is still dancing with New York City Ballet and touring with the company. Letters from 1957 are partly from Warm Springs, Ga. where Le Clercq was being treated for the polio she had contracted the previous year while touring in Denmark. She talks about her friends, including Jerome Robbins, Robert Irving, and her then husband George Balanchine.

- Tanaquil Le Clercq was born in 1929 and began dance training at age seven with Mikhail Mordkin, and in 1941 at the School of American Ballet. She was a member of Ballet Society in 1946 and New York City Ballet in 1948 and was a featured dancer in works by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. She was married to Balanchine from 1952-1969. While touring with New York City Ballet in 1956 she contracted polio which ended her dance career. She later became a published author with The ballet cook book (1966) and Mourka, the autobiography of a cat (1965). She died in 2000, age 71.
