Carolyn Brown speaks with Deborah Jowitt about her early dance training with her mother, Marion Stevens Rice, in the Denishawn technique and repertory; studying at the Juilliard School with Antony Tudor and Margaret Craske; how she began studying with Merce Cunningham; her time with Cunningham at Black Mountain College; how music affects the experience of performing Cunningham's works; dramatic content in Cunningham's works; Cunningham's 1964 piece Winterbranch; Cunningham's avoidance of discussing interpretations of his work with dancers; the challenges of learning Cunningham's technique and choreography; studying at the School of American Ballet; the art world in New York in the 1950s, including her association with Robert Rauschenberg; and her parents' reaction to her work with Cunningham.
