Biography (note)
  • Carola Goya was born in 1906 and studied Spanish dance in New York and Madrid. She danced professionally with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet and the Jose Greco Dance Company. Her debut as a solo dancer was in 1927, performing in concert settings and with symphony orchestras. In 1954, she formed a dance partnership with ethnic dancer Matteo and were married in 1974. Together they founded the Indo-American Dance Company, performing also under the name Foundation for Ethnic Dance. She later taught at the Jacob's Pillow Festival and New York City's High School of Performing Arts. She died in 1994.
  • Matteo was born Matteo Marcellus Vittucci in 1919. He graduated from Cornell University and later received a M.A. in dance education from Springfield College. His early training was in ballet at the Metropolitan Opera Ballet School and he performed with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. In 1953, he made his debut as an ethnic dancer and this became his main area of performance and teaching. He studied and taught dance forms from Japan, India, and Spain. He is the author of The language of Spanish dance and Woods that dance (a study in using castanets). He formed a dance partnership with Carola Goya in 1954 and the couple married in 1974. They performed and taught together under the names Foundation for Ethnic Dance and the Matteo Ethno-American Dance Theater. He died in New York City in 2011.
