  • The New York Times parody issue was conceived and organized by Christopher Cerf with the assistance of writers George Plimpton, Freddy Plimpton, Rustine ("Rusty") Unger, and the British-born satirist Tony Hendra during New York City's 2-month-old pressman's strike, which had shut down all NYC newspapers.
  • In the wake of the 33-day reign of John Paul I in Aug.-Sept. 1978, Hendra posed for the front-page picture for the story about the Liverpudlian "Pope John Paul John Paul I," who "served as pope for 19 minutes," under headline "Pope Dies Yet Again; Reign is Briefest Ever; Cardinals Return From Airport."
  • Other contributors include: Washington Post columnist Carl Bernstein, Vietnam War journalist Frances FitzGerald, Newsweek's Saigon bureau chief Kevin Buckley, social and political commentator Michael J. Arlen, novelist Jerzy Kosinski, screenwriter and novelist Terry Southern, and screenwriter Nora Ephron.
  • All bylines are aliases parodying NYT reporters, feature columnists, critics, and op-ed columnists.
  • Christopher Cerf is an author, a Grammy Award-winning composer, and the co-creator of the PBS literacy education show "Between the Lions."
