- Summary
- The Vocal Groups collection depicts mainly African American vocal groups associated with popular music, primarily jazz, soul, rock, funk, and disco, and other genres as well as choirs and gospel groups. The collection dates from the 1940s to the 1980s and consists mostly of studio portraits as well as a few views of the artists in performance, probably used for publicity purposes. There is a limited number of images of vocal groups from outside United States as well as multiracial vocal groups. Among the vocal groups depicted are the Delfonics, Kitty and the Haywoods, Martha and the Vandellas, Marvelettes, Mills Brothers, Miracles, Orioles, and the Tymes.
- Other photograph collections containing images of vocal groups include Entertainers, the Portrait Collection, the Helen-Armstead Johnson Photograph Collection, and the Frederick D. Murphy Photograph Collection. Related collections include Musicians, Musical Groups, and Vocalists.
