- Summary
- Calland, record collector, teacher and broadcaster, and Anna Hamlin, a singer and a vocal coach, review Anna's father, the tenor George Hamlin, alternating reminiscences of him with complete recordings of the music works he performed. These works include: "Sally in our alley" by Henry Carey; "Siciliana" and "Drinking song" from Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni; Minnelied "Holder klingt der Vogelsang" by Johannes Brahms; "When other lips and other hearts" from The Bohemian Girl by Michael William Balfe; oratorios "Hiawatha's wedding feast" by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor to words by Longfellow and Franz Joseph Haydn's "The creation"; "Lolita" by Arturo Buzzi-Peccia sung in English, and an old Scottish song "Turn ye to me." Calland presents each recording with deep analysis and commentary. Anna speaks about her father's career as an oratorio and lieder singer who also sang in the opera, his training in Chicago and Europe, his temperament, his voice teachers, and recalls other singers of that period. Calland and Anna discuss the quality of old and contemporary recordings, G. Hamlin's repertoire, acoustics of various theaters and their effect on voice projection, and more.
