Summary

Representation of the quadrille, a dance for four couples, as performed in a private home. The dancers are accompanied by a fiddler, who leans against a wall in the background. He is speaking the words "La poule" (contained in a word balloon), directing the dancers to execute the third of the five parts or figures that usually composed the quadrille.

Biography (note)

• This print reverses the image seen in a unsigned print of the same title, published in London by J. Sidebotham in 1817, and held by the British Museum. It differs somewhat in style, details, and coloration from the British Museum example. The original image may have been the work of Robert Cruikshank; he and his brother George Cruikshank produced several cartoons satirizing the quadrille, a ballroom dance popular in the nineteenth century. The signature I.R. Cruikshank, used by Robert Cruikshank, appears on Quadrilles-- practising for fear of accidents, a print stylistically similar to this one.
