- With 4 hand-colored plates designed by the author, 3 engraved by M. Jackson, and one by John Greenaway (father of the artist and children's book illustrator Kate Greenaway). John Greenaway plate is "The Two Roses," opposite p. 20.
- Final 16 p. comprise Grant and Griffith's advertising catalog of the "Original Juvenile Library."
- Both the author and his brother, Charles Robert (1803-1850), wrote under the Crowquill pseudonym, though Charles also wrote under the pseudonym of Hal Willis. Alfred's other pseudonym was Baron Krakemsides. He was long associated with writing for magazines and journals, including Colburn's New Monthly, Bentley, and Punch. He was especially well known for his illustrations featuring anthropomorphic animals, as depicted here in the plate for "The Mole Knome," which serves as the book's frontispiece. Alfred occasionally illustrated stories for his brother.

- Berg Collection copy bound by Bayntun (Bath, Eng.) in antique three-quarter crushed blue morocco over marbled boards, corner pieces gilt ruled, the spine with gilt double-ruled panels with small triple stopped corners, within compartments between gilt stipple raised bands, gilt lettered in two compartments; all edges gilt; with the publisher's original gilt decorated blue cloth retained and bound in the rear.Berg Collection copy with illustrated bookplate of Steve Jubin affixed to top board paste-down, with drawing by Arthur Rackham, 1901.
