- Note
- Elizabeth Mayer (1884-1970) was a German-born American translator and editor who worked with W.H. Auden, Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears, and other writers and musicians. She translated Goethe's Italian Journey (1962) with W.H. Auden, and he dedicated to her the poem "New Year Letter" and the book of verse that included it, The Double Man (1941). She was a mother figure for him, and he remained close to her for many years. Near the end of her life, he wrote about her (not mentioning her by name) in his poem "Old People's Home."
