- Summary
- Rupert Holmes, an English-born American composer, singer-songwriter, musician and author of plays, novels and stories, discusses his family, educational and professional background, his career as a playwright, and his experience working with Joseph Papp on his musical The mystery of Edwin Drood (book, music and lyrics by Rupert Holmes), later known as Drood, in 1985, that he was encouraged to write by Joseph Papp and his wife Gail Merrifield Papp after they attended one of Holmes's cabarets in 1983. He talks about the theatrical history of The mystery of Edwin Drood that was produced in New York City's Central Park at the Delacorte Theatre (directed by Wilford Leach), and moved to Broadway by Papp in 1985, and about critical reaction and audience response to the play. Holmes reminisces about his work with various production and cast members, such as W. Leach, the director, and George Rose, the actor. He also talks about Papp's personality and his role as a producer and director of the New York Shakespeare Festival and the founder of the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theatre, and about his professional relationship with Papp.
