Note

• The "Sporting Green" is a sports supplement of the San Francisco Chronicle, printed on green paper.
• Chronicle issues: Oct. 16, 20, 21, 26, 27, 1956; Examiner issue: Oct. 19, 1956.
• Neal Cassady, fictionalized in Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road (1956) as Dean Moriarity, and in Kerouac's Visions of Cody as Cody Pomeray, was a compulsive gambler who was particularly drawn to thoroughbred racing.
• Cassady is quoted, apparently from a letter to his wife, Carolyn, "always bet on the third-choice horse on the grounds that the odds are better and the first two choices are overrated" (David Sandison and Graham Vickers. Neal Cassady: The Fast Life of a Beat Hero. Chicago: Chicago Review Press, 2006, p. 242).
