- 1 box (96 v.); 34 x 34 cm.
- Summary
- 96 miniature books (each 40 x 40 mm.) issued in covered wooden box. 48 vol. are of black paper, printed in white; 48 vol. are of white paper, printed in black. When 32 v. of each color are arranged in a grid, alternating colors so as to form a chessboard, a game of chess may be played with the 32 v. that remain. Each vol. contains one of 32 literary quotations that reveals its function as a chess piece (pawn, castle (for rook), horse (for knight), bishop, queen, king). With an insert ([2] leaves on 1 folded sheet ; 15 x 6 cm.) giving the title, the artist's name and the year "1984," and instructions for playing.
