- Summary
- A portrait of Giselle summary: Within the framework of coaching Patricia McBride and Helgi Tomasson in the roles of Giselle and Albrecht, Anton Dolin tells the history of the ballet Giselle, outlines its story, discusses the many noted interpreters of the ballet, and talks with eight ballerinas about the role, their interpretations, etc. There is rare footage of a 1932 performance by Olga Spessivtzeva and Dolin, and other footage, covering most of the ballet, by Alicia Alonso, Yvette Chauviré, Carla Fracci, Tamara Karsavina, Natalia Makarova, Alicia Markova, and Galina Ulanova. Their partners include Cyril Atanasoff, Erik Bruhn, Dolin, Alexander Godunov, Rudolf Nureyev, and Azari Plisetzky. Dancers whose performances are discussed include Pavlova, Vaganova, Preobrajenska, Oboukhoff, Nijinsky, Legat, Lifar, and John Gilpin.
- Dick Cavett interview of Anton Dolin summary: Anton Dolin discusses attending acting school at the Italia Conte School with Gertrude Lawrence and Noel Coward; performing in Peter Pan as child actor; the difficulty lifting his dance partners Alicia Markova (Giselle) and Irina Baronova (Bluebeard); first meeting Vaslav Nijinsky ca. 1924 with Serge Dyaghilev at Nijinsky's home outside Paris, again in 1937 at the asylum sitting in the garden and at his funeral in 1950; Nijinsky's technique compared to current ballet dancers and Nijinsky's death and where he is buried. The second half of interview begins with a talk about Olga Spessitsova, her struggles with mental illness and transferring her from the Poughkeepsie State asylum to the the Tolstoy Foundation near Nyack, New York; performing a scene as Diaghilev talking to Anna Pavlova from the play, Conversations; portraying his first comic role in Fokine's Bluebeard; dancing on pointe; the female dominance in ballet and Dyaghilev bringing back the male role; being in the U.S. during the war; and concludes with the incident leading to his retirement from dancing.
