Note
  • Issue No. 1 (Sept. 1969) published in London; succeeding issues, nos. 2-8, published in Amsterdam by Joy Publications, March 1970-June 1974.
  • All published.
  • Tabloid newspaper format heavily illustrated with black-and-white photographs and drawings of naked men and women engaged in sexual acts alone and with each other.
  • With: Suck Special Issue, "The Virgin Sperm Dancer: an Ecstatic Journey" (The Hague: Bert Bakker, June 1972).
  • "Virgin Sperm Dancer" issue (small folio, in card stock, color-printed wrappers, 72 p.), by William Levy, photographed by Ginger Gordon, and designed by Anthon Beeke.
  • Edited by William Levy, Jim Haynes, Germaine Greer and Heathcote Williams, with the assistance of Willem de Ridder, Jesper James, Billy Sugar, Susan Janssen, Lynne Tillman, Fatima Ingram and others.
  • Suck was conceived in the summer of 1969 by Bill Daley, Jim Haynes, William Levy and Germaine Greer, who decided to create "a new revolutionary sex-publication." The first issue outraged political, religious and police authorities, especially in Great Britain, where the Special Branch closed the Postbox address and raided the Arts Lab, Suck's publication office, in Drury Lane, London.
  • Germaine Greer announced the paper's purpose as the creation of a new pornography which would demystify male and female bodies. The conflict between these aims and her feminist critique of male oppression culminated in her resignation from Suck, triggered by the publication in issue no. 7 of an explicit nude photograph of her, rather than the nude photos of all the editors, as had been agreed. In the following, final, issue, Greer's letter of resignation expressed her outrage, accusing the paper of adopting a counter-revolutionary mentality.
  • Suck's list of contributing writers, photographers, illustrators, and artists included a mixture of counterculture, politically radical, avant-garde, and mainstream cultural notables: W. H. Auden, Suzanne Brogger, H. Rap Brown (Jamil Al-Amin), Gunther Brus, William S. Burroughs, Tom Clark, Robert Crumb, Michael McClure, Otto Muehl, Harold Norse, Valarie Solanas, Jean Stapleton, Alexander Trocchi (a translation of Apollinaire), S. Clay Wilson, Georges Wolinski, the editors and many others.
  • Photographers included Anna Beeke, E. F. Bouwman, Bill Daley, Ed van der Elsken, Gabi Naseman, Gerlinde Prejawa, Nigel Waymouth, Ralf-Rainer Rygulla, Ron Reid and others.
  • Correspondents included Sinclaire Beiles, Barbet Schroeder, Richard Neville, Felix de Mendelssohn, Urban Gwerder and Caroline Coon.
  • Advertisers included It, Time Out, Oz, Rolling Stone, Giorno Poetry Systems, the Sexual Freedom League and Other Scenes, along with numerous personals.
