- "From the reeking slums of a big city, from the twighlight world of escate-hungry 'junkies', comes this striking and powerful novel of tormented adolescents -- neglected by society, victimized by ruthless dope-peddlers. Reefer Boy is the subject of drug addiction and its manacing attraction for juveniles. The hero is 16-year-old Chico and his friend Angel, and the book shows their inevitable moral and physical destruction through their craving for drugs" -- from first leaf, recto, preceding title page.
- "Hal Ellson died on Oct. 31, at his Brooklyn home, at the age of 84. Ellson wrote dozens of novels and hundreds of short stories, many dealing with big-city teen-agers and juvenile delinquency. Much of his material came from his career as a nurse's aide in the psychiatric adolescent ward at Bellevue Hospital and as a recreational therapist. His stories were published in many magazines and collections, including the Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine and Best Detective Stories. Among his novels are Duke, Summer Street, Games and Tomboy, which was made into a movie in France." -- from New York Times obituary, Nov. 9, 1994.
