- Summary
- Set designs, mostly for unidentified and probably unrealized ballets, variously labeled "Design for ballet," "Design for a ballet," or simply "Ballet." One painting is identified on the verso as Colloque sentimental, but it is uncertain whether this had any connection with the ballet Sentimental colloquy (choreography, André Eglevsky; music, Paul Bowles), first performed in New York in 1944 by Ballet International, with sets and costumes by Salvador Dalí. An irregularly shaped painting labeled "Kreuzberg Ballet, Cleveland, Ohio" may have been a graphic design for a poster or program rather than a set design. It is not known whether "Kreuzberg" refers to German modern dancer Harald Kreutzberg. The photographic print, labeled "Madison Square Garden, Jewish Appeal," is a sketch of a performance in progress, including dancers, orchestra, and audience as well as a view of the set. It was probably designed for the United Jewish Appeal's Night of stars benefit, held annually at Madison Square Garden, New York City, during the 1940s.
