Biography (note)
  • The nutcracker (choreography, George Balanchine after Lev Ivanov; music, Peter Tchaikovsky) was first presented by the New York City Ballet in 1954 with sets by Horace Armistead and costumes by Karinska. In 1964, after the company's move to the larger stage of New York State Theater at Lincoln Center, Ter-Arutunian was commissioned to design new sets and lighting.
  • The unicorn, the gorgon and the manticore (choreography, John Butler; music and libretto, Gian-Carlo Menotti) was first presented in 1956 with sets by Jean Rosenthal and costumes by Robert Fletcher. This design was made for performances at the Festival of Two Worlds, Spoleto, Italy, in 1970.
  • Vienna waltzes (choreography, George Balanchine) was first performed by the New York City Ballet in 1977. Tales from the Vienna Woods, its opening section, was danced to music by Johann Strauss the younger.
  • Rouben Ter-Arutunian designed the sets and costumes for the first production of Voluntaries (choreography, Glen Tetley; music, Francis Poulenc) by the Stuttgart Ballet in 1973. It has since been taken into the repertory of many ballet companies, among them Dance Theater of Harlem.
  • Claude Debussy's opera Pelléas et Mélisande was first presented at the Opéra-Comique (Salle Favart), Paris, in 1902. Rouben Ter-Arutunian designed the sets and costumes for a production staged by Gian Carlo Menotti at the Festival of Two Worlds, Spoleto, Italy, in June 1966.
  • Rouben Ter-Arutunian, 1920-1992, was born of Armenian parentage in Tblisi, Georgia, and studied in Berlin, Vienna, and Paris before immigrating to the United States in 1951. He has designed sets and costumes for dance, opera, drama, television, and film.
