Summary
Two costume designs? for unidentified dance or theatre works. One depicts a three-quarter-length view of a woman in a bodice decorated with spirals and spikes, the other a full-length figure of a man in a plumed three-cornered hat, an elaborately cut coat over a skirt, black gloves, and boots. He holds up a white scroll in his left hand. On the verso of this drawing is a b&w sketch depicting a woman from the waist up, possibly at the top of a pedestal.

Biography (note)
  • Eugene Berman, a painter and stage designer, was born in Russia, which his family fled during the Russian Revolution. He studied and worked in Europe, then immigrated to the United States in 1935. From the 1930s to the 1950s he designed sets and costumes for ballet and opera companies.
  • Richard Park Beard, 1925-2009, the former owner of these drawings, made his debut as a professional dancer with Ballet International in 1944, and subsequently danced with Ballet Theatre, Ballet Society, and the New York City Ballet. He also danced and choreographed for television and nightclub shows.
