4 paintings on cardboard : watercolor over graphite, color; 27 x 18 cm. or smaller.
Summary
Two designs for scenic elements, respectively a cactus and a scarecrow. One design for a prop, a gramophone on a stand. The fourth item in this collection is a mock award reading in full: "The Willard G. Levitas to Dance ballads for recognition of Willard G. Levitas, boy designer, long before Local 829 did. Newark, New Jersey, May 3, 1950, A.D." It bears the stamp of United Scenic Artists, Local 829, and is signed Willard G. Levitas.

  • These designs may have been intended for a nightclub show, Dance ballads, performed by Nelle Fisher and Jerry Ross at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York, in late 1950 and early 1951.
  • Willard Levitas studied art at the Parsons School of Design. He may have met Nelle Fisher while working at a summer job at Camp Tamiment resort in the Poconos. He worked as a set designer, art director, and producer for various television series and specials in the 1950s and 1960s, and continued to paint and exhibit his artworks after his retirement.
